The line from Tebay to Darlington that once passed close to Orton was closed in 1968 and Orton is no longer accessible by train. However visitors staying in Orton can enjoy fabulous scenery on the nearby Settle-Carlisle railway.
Settle - Carlisle Railway
The Settle-Carlisle Railway is about 12 miles away at Kirkby Stephen station where you can pick up the train and pay for your journey on board. The 72 mile route from Settle to Carlisle is arguably the most scenic rail journey in England, passing through spectacular scenery in Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales. If you have never travelled on the train before we recommend that you purchase a round trip ticket so that you can enjoy all that the line has to offer.
