Sizergh Castle and Gardens (14 miles)

Situated south of Kendal, just off the A590, Sizergh Castle is the ancestral home of the Strickland family. Excellent guided tours are available but note that the castle and garden are not open every day. While the house is of great interest the limestone rock garden is spectacular. This rock garden, created in the 1920's, incorporates large slabs of limestone around which grow a marvellous variey of acers and other beautiful plants and trees. The garden alone is well worth the drive from Orton.

Acorn Bank, Temple Sowerby (15 miles)

Of great interest in the grounds of Acorn Bank is the ancient corn mill which is in the process of being restored by volunteers. Restoration is still ongoing but at least one of the large grinding stones can now be seen in operation. The mill is driven by water wheels that draw water from the adjacent Crowdundle Beck. In addition there are many walks laid out in the grounds which, at different times of the year, are encompassed by snowdrops or daffodills etc.
