There are some interesting National Trust properties within easy and picturesque drives from Orton. Those with gardens are well worth repeat visits at different times of the year. Travelling distances given below are approximate.
Sizergh Castle and Gardens (14 miles)
Situated south of Kendal, just off the A590, Sizergh Castle is the ancestral home of the Strickland family. Excellent guided tours are available but note that the castle and garden are not open every day. While the house is of great interest the limestone rock garden is spectacular. This rock garden, created in the 1920's, incorporates large slabs of limestone around which grow a marvellous variey of acers and other beautiful plants and trees. The garden alone is well worth the drive from Orton.
